and unthinkable. that's what the new jersey governor chris christie is calling the damage from the super storm sandy that slammed his state. and just look along the jersey shore. or what was. tonight, officials are blaming the storm for more than three dozen deaths across the country. and more than 8 million customers, not people, 8 million customers have no power. most of them in new york and new jersey. look at this map here. the damage from the monster storm extends as far as west as michigan. the blue areas are the flooding. the red is wind damage and the white, that's snow and lots of it. parts of west virginia have already gotten more than 2 feet of snow. the blizzard warnings are in effect in more than a dozen counties until tomorrow afternoon. new jersey, of course, took the direct hit from sandy just south of atlantic city. officials say the casinos are okay but the storm washed away part of the board walk there. and in other towns along the jersey shore. farther north just outside new york city emergency workers are using boats to rescue hundreds upon hundreds of people from homes th

twitter accounts @robmarcianocnn. he's awesome. governor christie says no washing cars, no watering lawns. in hoboken, right across the river from new york city, the lower part of the city, workers have managed to drain those filthy floodwaters. they thought maybe they were filled with sewage and bacteria and gasoline. this had been keeping almost half of the city's residents trapped inside their homes. let's get right to bob van dillen. the national guard is there, right, bob? they're helping with rescues and helping with supplies too. >> reporter: indeed, soledad. good morning to you. a different story flrthis morni from yesterday. the national guard is still here, but yesterday morning, everybody were in their trucks. the trucks are still here, but they're not idling and i haven't seen a single national guard troop and all the roads dry. the evacuations, they have essentially ceased. that's the good news. but the bad news is the power is still out and people obviously are getting a little bit cold. temperatures right now down into the 40s. yesterday morning, this was also a staging are

even had republicans, including the prominent republican chris christie, praising him for his efforts, so all around praise for the president. in reacting to this, he's able to look the part, and people seemed to react to what he was doing. >> well, let's talk about that reaction because we just learned that even mayor bloomberg has somewhat endorsed president obama, and as you just mentioned, i mean we've seen sort of a bromance, right, between governor krit tee who has been such a supporter of romney and now barack obama. i mean he has been ee fusive in his praise of the president. what is your sense as to what effect that may have on this election? >> mitt romney has been trying for the longest time to be a bipartisan, even post-partisan leader, and mitt romney is now seeing barack obama play that role in real life. chris christie to go out of his way in praising president obama and then mayor bloomberg's endorsement. mayor bloomberg epitomizes the idea of someone beyond party labels. so for him to come off the sidelines now and cite president obama on his position on climate chang

significant damages. martha: we heard from governor christie, he is very concerned about the whole state. i know he is trying to get up into a helicopter to look at some of the damage. the wind are still too strong out there for that. rick what can you tell us about that whole area? martha: that was live shot from seaside heights, new jersey. go ahead, rick. >> the damages are widespread. mike come around this way. just to give people an idea how deep this stand is on this particular road. this along, like, you know, getting front-end loader in here to scoop the sand off the streets. this is just one block of one community. there are communities up and down the new jersey coastline just like this. they saw several feet of water. all the dunes were breeched. they have been washed away. that sand is up and down the streets here. look how bad this oceanfront hotel was torn up. the fencing is knocked down. we saw pieces of houses float by us last night. you see where some of the debris is coming from. there are fences gone. there are pools carried away and businesses are just really, really hit

chris christie. >>> coming up, how hurricane sandy has exposed one of mitt romney's biggest lies about president obama. that's in the rewrite. new prilosec otc wildberry is the same frequent heartburn treatment as prilosec otc. now with a fancy coating that gives you a burst of wildberry flavor. now why make a flavored heartburn pill? because this is america. and we don't just make things you want, we make things you didn't even know you wanted. like a spoon fork. spray cheese. and jeans made out of sweatpants. so grab yourself some new prilosec otc wildberry. [ male announcer ] one pill each morning. 24 hours. zero heartburn. satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. that's the sound of car insurance companies these days. here a cheap, there a cheap, everywhere a cheap... you get it. so, what if instead of just a cheap choice, you could make a smart choice? like, esurance for example. they were born online and built to save people money from the beginning. it's what they've always done. not just something they cheap about. that's insurance for the modern world. esurance. now backed

is scheduling to arrive in atlantic city to survey the damage alongside governor chris christie. this morning the associated press reports the storm killed at least 50 people. there are more than 8.2 million households still without power across 17 states. and many of the outages could last beyond election day. between damage to property and the economy, the total impact expected to reach a staggering $50 billion. the damage is perhaps nowhere worse than the coastline of new jersey where sandy came ashore laying waste to an amusement park and historic boardwalk at seaside heights. as for the airports, jfk, newark, they're expected to resume limited service this morning. the same cannot be said for laguardia. jetblue posted these photos of the runways submerged. more than 18,000 flights have already been canceled as a result of sandy. and police had to take to the air to save victims from rooftops in staten island after floodwaters surrounded their homes. they were loaded one by one into baskets before being hoisted to safety. now let's go to breezy point. a neighborhood of queens which looks

boosters, new jersey governor chris christie, being there with president obama saying sort of,"to hell with politics, this is about people's lives." t think we could see a similar endorsement or chris christie says president obama is best on this issue? >> i doubt he would actually say that in so many words. but i think he actually did say something with body language an@ with political theater. it is a very, very important distinction. you saw chris christie snap into pragmatic governor mode, and mode much more similar to the way, for example, mike bloomberg conducts himself as mayor of the city. sure, his ideological views, but when there is a real crunch and a real need for leadership, he is not going to stand on -- he is not going to lean toward political posturing and certainly is not going at that point to pretend that the federal government has nothing to do with the health and welfare of american society. i think chris christie was communicating something significant in how he worked with the president and singled out the president's -- by the way, singled out fema for administ

hard-hit areas of new jersey today, touring those areas with governor christie. >> here in new york, most of lower manhattan remains without power this morning. here's a live image. in the foreground is brooklyn, where the power's on. but across the river, absolute blackout. the local utility, con ed, actually had to cut power to some areas of brooklyn and staten island overnight. and along the jersey shore, the view from the air revealing just how much devastation that popular tourist area suffered. there's worries about leaking fuel in some still-flooded towns. new jersey governor chris christie is promising the area will be rebuilt. he says it won't be the same, though. >>> and further from the east coast, sandy will go down as a massive snowmaker. one ski resort in west virginia reported three feet of mostly heavy, wet snow that was blown by 60-mile-per-hour winds. the weight of the snow was too much for some trees, many of which collapsed across roads, forcing those roads to close. >> the scope is just unbelievable. >>> once again this morning, our broadcast is dedicated to the

of atlantic city and new jersey governor chris christie. christie felt the mayor didn't take the warning seriously enough, didn't pass it on to the residents of atlantic city to get out, and he told them if you haven't gotten out at that point, stay. chris christie said that was the wrong thing to do. we spoke to the mayor on anderson's show and he said the governor doesn't know what he's talking about. people are hunk erg down. four to five people in shelters here in atlantic city. the gusts just whipped up around me right now. while the water levels are receding, we're still getting the back end of the storm. all indications are we have at least an hour more of this to go before it starts to settle down and move to other parts of the region. philadelphia, 60 miles west of me, has still got to see the worst of it. they're still expecting flooding in low-lying areas in philadelphia. that's the situation in atlantic city right now, erin. >> ali velshi, thank you. we're able to hear alli. in an hour or so ago, that was not the case, you could not hear him at all the storm was so bad there.

christie calling the devastation on the jersey coast unthinkable. parts of the seaside park are now in the ocean. photography showing the rollercoaster literally in the middle of the ocean. there are new reports that the ride has been entirely swept away by the storm surge. listen to the governor earlier. >> the pier at seaside park is essentially half washed out. the rollercoaster is now in the ocean. the second pier, the more southerly pier is significantly damaged and some of those amusements are now in the ocean. megyn: 2 million people remain without electricity in new jersey. the first priority is helping people still at risk. joining us is new jersey congressman chris smith who represents people living along the hard-hit jersey shore. you are touring with the governor to see the devastation. can you give us a feel for what you have seen and heard so far? >> the governor just left delmar. it has been devastated. i was in point pleasant earlier today. water is everywhere. boats on on the road. everything -- i'm alive and i'll keep persevering. knocked down just hurricane sandy

dozens of evacuees. governor chris christie blamed atlantic city's mayor, who says didn't do enough to let people know they needed to leave. >> i hope and pray that there won't be any loss of life because of it. >> reporter: from sleepy beachside communities to the nation's capital and new england, sandy was unrelenting, bringing down everything from mammoth trees to utility poles. a coast guard rescue took place after the "hms bounty" sank. in allenhurst new jersey cbs news cameras captured waves crashing against a beachfront restaurant before the building collapsed. even houses on stilts no match. >> it's pretty bad. it's not over yet. so i don't know how much worse it's going to be. >> reporter: and there wasn't just rain. there was snow. whiteout conditions in some spots. sandy may be slowing down but the twin threat in the east from inundating rains and historic flooding is far from over. and there is more evidence of that in moonachie, new jersey this morning just outside new york city. rescues and evacuations have been under way today after that city

, but on thursday, of course, you had all the pictures of governor christie and the president of the united states and the endorsement by mike bloomberg. how name packets out there it's hard to say. at this point from now number tuesday it's get out the vote, matt. it's the ground game. that's what really counts. >> let's talk about the images we're looking at right there. this was wednesday, president obama and chris christie touring some of the devastated areas. yes, they came together for all the right reasons. chris christie was the keynote speaker at the republican convention. he's a key ally of mitt romney. did that image hurt the romney campaign? >> well, i'm sure that it cautioned a lot of angst backstage, and i'm sure that in the obama campaign the operatives were saying, yes, we've got chris christie at our side with these extraordinary images, but, again, both sides say we now know where the votes are. we know there are very few undecided. need to get them to polls and on time on tuesday. >> as they are working to get people to the polls, mitt romney is saying i'm the agent of change an

tell you what, you know, my mom, christie, used to have an expression. joey, if there's something bad, something goodwill come. and i want to tell you what makes me so proud. in moments of crisis, democrats and republicans always came together. i've got to tell you, it was reassuring to be on those calls. i really mean this. it was reassuring. that's how it's supposed to work. we always work better in america when we work together and everyone's in on the deal. and i tell you -- >> that's one way to look at it. good morning. it's friday, november 2nd. welcome to "morning joe." it's been a long week. with us on set, msnbc and "time" magazine senior political analyst, mark halperin. national affairs editor for "new york" magazine and msnbc political analyst, john heilemann and pulitzer prize-winning historian, jon meacham. good to have you on the show this morning. we will talk politics soon. >> thank you, ma'am. >> actually, the candidates are jumping back into the fray. full campaign mode again. and we have an endorsement by mayor michael bloomberg to talk about. >> is that what that

the damage today with governor christie, and coming in this morning, i heard -- i was listening to the radio and i heard a bunch of sounds from christie. >> he had gone to the shore yesterday. >> giving people hugs. the boardwalk is gone in a lot of places. we showed some amusement rides. kayla has spent two days in cape may. she's moved north to atlantic city where the damage is also extensive. hey, kayla. >> hey, joe. the president is scheduled to visit atlantic city here alongside governor christie. we'll be taking that live as it occurs. the brunt of the storm was born by the jersey shore. the entire state of new jersey still reeling. two million residents without power. and governor christie calling the damage incalculable. that's the job of officials as they start figuring out how to start repairing the damage that has occurred. some experts around the industry have tried to start putting a number on this. a disaster modelling agency forecast losses between ten and 20 billion dollars. a former economist with the international trade commission scored that much higher with losses up to $

jersey shore among the hardest hit where the governors of new jersey, chris christie, said that the damage there is absolutely unthinkable and the pictures from above are mindboggling. even as the storm moved north it did not spare maryland, delaware, washington, dc, or northern virginia. hundreds of thousands lost power. roads and bridges are closed. shore lines are battered. the storm then slammed into the big city and surrounding areas, a record surge of seawater coming in to the lower part of manhattan flooding the subways, the tunnels, the roads, everything below 34th street in new york city is without power, the bridges are back open, the subways may not be open for four or five days, the trains that go to new jersey, no one knows they were flooded up to the ceiling in some cases. the trains that lead to long island, no clouds. the city is paralyzed. in connecticut the storm damaged homes and millions of trees are down. some homes washed off their foundation. it caused damage and power outage in pennsylvania, in massachusetts, in new hampshire and in vermont. in all,

in that state. governor chris christie said the damage is, quote, unthinkable and some of the worst that he's ever seen. now, the jersey shore was particularly hard hit. homes flooded and destroyed, boardwalks in several beach towns were swept into the ocean. tonight the full extent of the damage there is still not known. in new york city, a 14-foot surge of sea water swelled into the streets of new york city. authorities say that at least 18 people have been killed. all three major airports in new york are still closed. the subway system is completely shut down. the mayor of new york, bloomberg, said it may take days before it's going to be up and running again. now, fox newschannel's own jamie colby is standing outside the brooklyn battery tunnel in manhattan where the governor toured the damage not too long ago. jamie, you've been there all day. what's the situation now at this hour? >> reporter: you know, sean, good evening to you. i had a chance to survey the damage with governor cuomo, and it is pretty incredible to see it up close and personal, but before we talk about the businesses

. this is a time to try to save yourself and your family. >> shepard: new jersey governor christie who tonight is angry. even before landfall sandy's winds were already doing damage. this a construction crane that partially collapsed in midtown manhattan just north of times square. a closer look here fire department officials tell fox news they closed off the surrounding streets, ordered people on the top floors of nearby buildings to evacuate. and officials say so far no injuries. that crane up 65 stories. look at this. the super storm is shut down mass transit in boston, philadelphia, washington, d.c. and new york. this is grand central terminal. and here the time square subway station. never have i seen it like this. officials say they cannot tell us when the trains and buses will be running again. but certainly not for tomorrow morning's rush. >> shepard: details of why less than a minute. first from steve, what's the latest from officials there? >> officials are really trying to emphasize that people should not go out. that they should stay in their homes. and perhaps the strong sexual of

christie and the mayor of atlantic city. governor said the mayor didn't follow the instructions properly, didn't work hard enough to get people out of the city. we had both of them on air last night, pretty much calling each other names. so i imagine there will be some phone calls this morning about what should have happened. but bottom line, our initial assessment of atlantic city right now, soledad, is it may -- it splay dodged the worst of it despite how bad it looked last night. >> it surely looked bad. thank you, ali, certainly appreciate it. we're going to head now to -- who's up next? peter king, congressman peter king, looks like he's ready for us. peter king is out in long island, and obviously long island took a big brunt of this storm. congressman king, thank you for your time. first tell me exactly the damage that you've seen. i haven't had a lot of live reports on what has happened in long island outside of my hometown, smithtown, which i know has lost power. can you tell me what some of the worst damage is? >> yeah, that's right. absolutely devastating. for instance, long b

sandy made land fall, it had been downgraded from a hurricane. but goverr chris christie said today the distinction made little difference to badly damaged beach towns. >> those out there who are facing loss, devastation, and a heart-breaking reality that your home may be gone, we're with you. we have a long road ahead of us but i have complete confidence we're going to come out of this better and stronger than before. >> woodruff: there will be much to rebuild. the storm destroyed a large section of the famed atlantic city board walk and farther north 1,000 people had to flee their homes after the water charged over a burm. some people had to be rescued late last night in a town after failing to evacuate. >> i was scared i was going to drown. it was just crazy. i had a hard time getting out of my house. >> reporter: water went up to your neck. >> yes and sometimes over my head. >> woodruff: the giant storm's reach also extended up and down the east coast and far inland. to the north, strong winds and heavy surf did damage in new england. sparks flew from downed power lines in westp

jersey governor chris christie made some very, very dire assessments to what he expects the damage will be in atlantic city and on the jersey shore. take a listen. >> i think what we'll find, unfortunately, when we get to the jersey shore today is total devastation. and that's the real concern. because not only is it people's homes and private property but also you have the tourism industry in new jersey which is one of our biggest industries. we're going to have to work hard to make sure we're ready for next summer at the jersey shore. >> reporter: now, of course, the casino industry the biggest industry in atlantic city. those 12 flagship casinos have been closed throughout the week. they cost about $50 million in lost revenue during irene and the expectation was that because the season was a little bit softer, maybe it wouldn't be as bad. now it's clear that even though as christie called it the damage is incalculable right now it will be much steeper than irene. hopefully we'll get more from christie later. a few other buzz words, search and rescue teams went out at 5:30 trying

probably heard the spat going on between new jersey governor chris christie and the mayor of atlantic city. the governor says the mayor didn't do enough to get people to take it seriously about leaving. the bottom line is that the water is all gone. this is where i was standing yesterday. this was waist deep at one point. the water has receded. still a lot of flooding. and we are seeing a number of coast guard overflies that started again at first light this morning around 7:00 am. and they're doing an evaluation of whether or not there need to be rescues. we've not heard of active search and rescues. they are evaluating flooding, seeing who needs help. that's the boredwalk behind me, about three-quarters of a mile down. you can see those red lights. mostly just emergency vehicles around town. no serious damage. there are power outages here in atlantic city, carol. >> i'm sure. ali velshi reporting live from atlantic city, new jersey. >>> we've been telling you all morning long about a breach in a levee in new jersey that has flooded at least four towns. the floodwaters are very deep right
